マレーバク(Tapirus indicus) は、東南アジア（マレー半島、タイ、スマトラ島、ミャンマーなど）に生息する絶滅危惧種です。絶滅を防ぐため、動物園での繁殖の努力がなされてきました。私は2015年から、マレー半島に生息する野生のマレーバクや飼育下のバクでの遺伝的多様性と集団遺伝構造の研究を行っています。マレー半島の野生個体群、タイ、スマトラ島、日本の飼育個体群の遺伝的多様性を把握するための新しい遺伝マーカーの開発を行っています。この研究が、マレーバクの今後の保全活動に役立つことを願っています。
