人間は動物と様々に関わりながら生きています。それは時に軋轢という関係にもなります。人間の生活空間で生じる軋轢は「動物福祉」という分野で議論されてきました。一方、野生動物の生活空間で生じる軋轢は「生物保全」という分野で議論されてきました。人間と動物との問題は複雑で、福祉か保全か、という単純に区別できるものではありません。動物福祉の観点から、飼育下チンパンジーの認知機能や環境エンリッチメントについて研究しています。西アフリカ、ギニア共和国で野生チンパンジーの保全活動もおこなってきました。福祉と保全にまたがる問題について考えていきたいと思います。
